However, and I might be imagining this, I get the impression that web browsing is slower, when several things are going on at once. After changing both the router MTU to 1500 and the LAN MTU to 1500, the procedure above suggests that the proper MTU is 1500. If you find a value for the MTU that is right for the LAN client then you can use that and leave the router at 1500, assuming you only have the one client. If you have the time it might be worth trying to set everything back to 1500 (on LAN client and on the router) and trying the procedure again. The ping command can not override the MTU already set. If the LAN client was already set to an MTU of 1300 then it is going to look that way. I do think I feel an improvement since reducing the MTU from 1500, although it could be placebo. The site I linked the second time tells you how to find out the ideal ISP MTU, and the reasoning seems pretty sound. ![]() ![]() Okay cool, that means I'm set up properly (both 1300). To be honest though, leaving everything as 1500 (often the default) tends to work fine. The best situation is to find the correct MTU for your Broadband connection and then set your LAN side MTU to be the same. Larger LAN side than WAN side MTU will give you a bottleneck. Interestingly, TCP Optimiser says the client MTU should be 1500, but when I enabled all the 'optimised' settings in TCPO I thought it impacted performance, so I reset back to defaults (so I'm not totally convinced that TCPO is always right).ĭoes having a larger LAN-side MTU than WAN-side MTU not result in a bottleneck at the router? Otherwise, I haven't manually set the MTU (at least, not that I'm aware of or can remember).
